So my parents did their tax return, but it got to be too complex so they had an accountant do it for them. It turned out that they owed more money, so they sent the IRS a check for the amount.
Not long after, they got a check from the IRS for that same amount. So my dad's accountant told him to hold onto it. After a few weeks, he said to just cash and see what happens.
After my dad cashed the check, he got a notice from the IRS that he owed them that amount PLUS interest.
Gotta love those IRS boobs.
Rush, I actually filled out my taxes one year, expecting a refund. The IRS wrote me telling me that I had filled the forms out incorrectly and was entitled to a BIGGER refund. They sent it, I spent it and then 3 years later, was informed that THEY had been wrong and that I now owed them the extra money plus penalties, interest and late fees. It took me about 3 more years to pay them off.
Go FairTax!!
