Social Security Sucks

If social security is so good, why can't we opt out of it? Didn't FDR say he wanted it privatized by the 50's? Why should we pay fucking 12.5% of our income to the largest, yes, the largest, government-run program in the world, if it's supposed to yield the same amount? Everyone says it's someone else's problem, but we need to stop it now. It is crap. I was reading the wikipedia entry for it and I noticed it's just stupid. Some U.N. charter claimed that people had the "right" to social security. Bullshit. I hate socialism. sorry, I'm just angry.

I think you nailed the problem with social security,

Some U.N. charter claimed that people had the "right" to social security

I feel as though I have a right to it, because, G-ddammit, I've paid into it.  I'd never heard that FDR wanted it privatized by the fifties; the most common FDR quote about SS that I've heard is that he made it "pay as you go" so that "No God damned politician could take it away."  I hate social security just as much as you do.  It is bullshit, if I may steal your wordage.

FDR was really brilliant, bless his heart.  He was so dedicated to Social Security that he erected a system which MUST run forever, if there are to be no losers.

Of course, he did this by having the working generation paying the retired generation.  There will always be a generation of AARP members refusing Social Security reform, because, by golly, they paid into it, so they need to get their's.

It really is indestructable public policy.  Thankfully, not everything is quite as ingeniously designed.

Another problem I have with Social Security is that it paved the way for universal government tracking numbers and ID cards on us all.

I could not agree with you more, darlin'.  Your anger makes me smile.

What a pity it is that we are always hearing of "reform" in this area, but never seeing anything except increasingly bloated spending.  I hate it when politikers drop the r-bomb.  It's like "global warming" or "trade deficit," an illusion meant to capture votes.  See what politics do to us?  Aaah!

If you actually have a verified quote of FDR saying he wanted it ended by the 50's, PM me with it.

Oh, and BTW, there is a *huge* difference between ending and privatization.  As soon as I can pigure out how to set up campaign web pages here, i'll explain
