Freakonomics

My economics teacher, a libertarian, had a few copies of a book laying around the classroom which he has been reading to us from. He offered to lend me the book, Freakanomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, for the weekend.

Anybody know anything about this book? So far what he's read has been interesting. He started off Tuesday with reading the top names for low-income children, and today he read an excerpt explaining why drug dealers still live with their moms.

I'll be reading this over the next few days, so I'll share my experiences throughout and afterward.

This book is on my "to-read" list. Sounds really interesting.

Great book.  At its core, the book explains the human (interaction) side of economics without losing the reader in ivory tower preachings  regarding laffer curves and the like.   Look out for "Superfreakanomics" coming out later this year.

I've been hearing mixed reviews on this one, and would be curious to hear what you guys have to say. I'm always on the look-out for a good "intro" book to economics -- always wind up buying copies of Economics In One Lesson by Hazlitt for people who want (or need) a bit of econ-owledge ;)

I thought the guy (VoteRando's teacher) was a statist bent on brainwashing your class. When are you going to start your econ diaries?

BTW - I love the Econ Diaries concept. Imagine your teacher saying something ridiculous in class, you then blog about it and the next day you use the collective wisdom of the Bureaucrash Activist Network to hand him his ass.

*sarcasminator set to mildly stun*

Jason, though I value your thought and insight immensly, I much prefer you not use the term "collective" in such a fashion. Might I suggest "collaborative wisdom" as a suitable alternative?

Ya, I got a chill when I wrote that. Replace "network" with "collective."

Do not read this book.

I repeat do not read this book.

It is full of useless and misinterpreted facts. Just because crime went down in the 90's, doesnt mean abortion was the only cause. The writer makes some interesting observations but they are nothing but inconclusive analyses.

Do not read this if you want to learn about economics. Only read it for a laugh or two.

lol im just glad im taking ap econ this year ... it's very surprising to learn actual economics and then hear people so grossly misunderstand markets and whatnot.

I gotta completely disagree with cuttooth. READ THIS BOOK. READ IT RIGHT NOW. I dont know how they get the idea that the evidence isnt valid. Ive researched it pretty extensively and have reached the conclusion that its pretty much a fact.
Im usually of the mind that the comment that pisses off the most people is the one that is true. Conservatives hate anything that might be suggested as "pro" abortion, and liberals cringe at the idea that less poor or minorities being born might in any way be a positive. Regardless of the tons of referenced data to back it up.
A great read by some great minds.

I'm liking it so far.

I've gotten as far as abortion causing a decrease in violence and what teachers and sumo wrestler have in common.
