Celebrate Repeal Day!
On December 5, 1933, the people of Utah stuck it to the teetotalers and ratified the 21st Amendment, bringing America's regrettable years of alcohol Prohibition to an end. To celebrate this glorious day, we invite you to relive the speakeasy and lift a glass to freedom.

Of course, far too many things are still forbidden. From a variety of drugs to delicious unpasteurized milk, if it's enjoyable and risky there's a good chance it's against the law. And while we can't bring narcotics to the bar and milk doesn't add much to the party, we're making a point of gathering in Virginia, free from the District's smoking ban. Light up and smell the liberty! Or don't. It's up to you, Bub.

Come join us in the speakeasy room at Ragtime to celebrate the end of Prohibition and protest government's countless intrusions into our personal business. We'll have great drink specials till 8 and the party lasts as long as you want it to. Bring friends, and speak easy.

Start Time: Wednesday, December 5, 2007 at 6:30pm
Location: The Ragtime Speakeasy Room
Street: 1345 N Court House Rd
City/Town: Arlington, VA
RSVP on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=5782847071

Not in DC? Start your own Repeal Day event!

Enjoying Capitalism in the Ukraine

IMG_0043Crasher LJ Reports:

I'm just on my way home from the Ukraine, where, Andrey Ilianarov, Putin's former economic advisor, a libertarian, held up his Bureaucrash "Enjoy Capitalism" shirt as a prop in a lecture to some 100 FSU-country students Cato gathered there for a conference.

CRASH ACROSS AMERICA '07: ORONO, ONTARIO
    (Saturday)
We woke up and made some final preparations before registration began at 11. Karen Selick made her annual appearance and gave a great talk on "Canada's Human Rights Codes -- Ugh!" She was followed by Gerry Nicholls who spoke on a topic crashers should care about: "Pigs, Power & Politics: Fighting for Freedom Che Guevara-style." He listed rules and examples to conduct a guerilla campaign in the information war. Marc Emery then spoke about his creative and principled tactics in his battles against the big U.S. and Canadian bureaucracies and their political masters.

To transition from the interesting talks to the upcoming entertainment I took the stage to be the master of ceremonies so that people could share how they are making the world a more free place. Based on audience clapping the brave volunteers would get a Bureaucrash t-shirt.

Update - Here's the video:

CRASH ACROSS AMERICA '07: ORONO, ONTARIO
    (Friday)
On Friday we followed Brendan to Orono, home of the Liberty Summer Seminar, and immediately started helping set up. Already there was Crasher Infamous Prodigy and Erin, the Bureaucrash Minister of Propaganda. We put up the tent just as it started to rain. At one point we all had to hold onto the poles to keep the bad weather from ruining our work. At an especially awful part of the experience a large amount of cold rain water fell off of the tent and landed on my back. Everyone laughed at my pain.

After everything was set up we opened the bottles of Liberty Ale and Jack Daniels and threw a party. The bravest of us (me, Jamie and Agata) went swimming in lake Jawoski (a pond). The three dudes that drove seventeen hours from New Brunswick kept the fire raging thanks to their impressive outdoor skills. Also joining us was Chris Kilmer who joined us all the way from New York. We went until the wee hours of the morning.

CRASH ACROSS AMERICA '07: WATERLOO, ONTARIO,
    CANADA (Thursday)
We made good time to Waterloo where we checked into a Howard Johnson's motel at 2:30PM after a meal at a burger joint. We passed out for a few hours before Peter and Agata Jaworski, two of the hosts of the Liberty Summer Seminar, and Aaron stopped by. We all had dinner before we headed to our main objective: Major Maker in Concert at the Starlight. Brenden, Matt and Janet met us at the venue where we rocked out. We all dig Major Maker because they have a great sound AND because their lead singer Lindy is a crasher. We support our own so it was great to see him in action and are thrilled that Major Maker is such a hit. After the gig we enjoyed some karaoke T.J.'s Road House and then called it a night at 4AM.

CRASH ACROSS AMERICA '07: WASHINGTON, DC to
    WATERLOO, ONTARIO, CANADA
Tom and I rented our sweet minivan from Dollar Rent-A-Car at noon on Thursday and drove it to Bureaucrash HQ where we packed it up nice. Lots of camping gear and Bureaucrash swag filled our ride up before we picked up our first passenger.

We then headed north with Tom as the driver and I served as the navigator with the help of Google Maps on my iPhone. We drove all night only stopping to sleep at a rest stop for a few hours. We woke up and drove to the Canadian border not looking forward to crossing a state checkpoint and showing our "papers." When we got there the Canadian border agent (We call him Wally) couldn't have been nicer. Don't get me wrong, he has a shitty job but he just asked us a couple of questions and had us hold up our passports. We told him about the documentary we are filming and that we hadn't planned on leaving anything in Canada. (We ended up leaving some empty beer bottles from Xaq Fixx's awesome homebrew and lots of seminar attendees walked away with Bureaucrash tees.)

This is in sharp contrast to my experience with the border patrol when entering the United States. I'm sure we'll have stories to tell about the unpleasantness of border enforcement in the "land of the free."

Crash Across America '07

I have some exciting news. As I'm typing this Crasher HayekFan is driving well above the speed limits from Alabama to Washington, DC. He'll pick me up where we'll head to Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, Earth to listen to our pal Lindy rock the doors off of The Starlight with his band Major Maker. That's on Thursday and we'll meet up with Xaq, Erin and Janet to complete the Crash Across America team (more on this in a bit). On Friday we help our other pal Peter set up the Liberty Summer Seminar on the beautiful Jaworski estate in the small town of Orono. Saturday & Sunday we'll hang out with over 60 Canadian libertarians (that's probably all of them) listening to exciting speakers and eating delicious food while washing it down with lots of beer.

On Monday we'll officially kickstart Crash Across America '07. Full details here but a note to our awesome readers (that's you). The bureaucrash.com homepage will be chock full of Crash Across America related blogs, videos, photos and we hope to update it often (depending on access to WI-FI on the road). If you want the content that you know and love you can find headlines here.

Otherwise, buckle up (or not) and get ready to Crash Across America

Guess Which Presidential Candidates Said the
    Following:

Freedom is not a concept in which people can do anything they want, be anything they can be. Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do.

Bureaucrash & La Baf Crash the Yes Men

On Wednesday, July 11th pro-state and pro-liberty culture jammers went head to head outside the Cato Institute in Washington, DC. On the side of statism was the Yes Men, a clever group of post-modern "identity correctors" who have targeted the Heritage Foundation, the World Trade Organization, McDonald's, Dow Chemical, ExxonMobil and the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. On the side of freedom was your beloved Bureaucrash and our french friends at La Baf who were fortunately in town. Sometimes we may agree with the Yes Men but when anyone strays into targeting libertarian groups and ideas it's going to end up badly for them as long as Bureaucrash is around. And they were reminded of this as they left.

On Monday the Yes Men came to the Competitive Enterprise Institute representing themselves as a video production company working on a successor to the famous "Free to Choose" television series. CEI has a policy of talking to anyone about limited government and free-markets but one policy expert smelled a rat and after a few minutes detective work he discovered that he had just spent some quality time with the Yes Men. CEI then called other organizations and found out that they were currently filming at another organization and that the next day they were scheduled to be at the Cato Institute. So we set the trap.

The plan was to wait for them to get ejected from Cato with crashers waiting for them on the streets. As a homage to the Yes Men, who like to wear costumes from time to time, your dutiful crashers dressed as an Indian chief, court jester, Pilgrim, Santa and a construction worker. We told them that we were the "No Men and we say no to the state!"  before baptizing them as capitalists with a lot of glitter. They were good sports about it and after we suggested that it was unwise to mess with libertarians they took off.

CRASH'D: Michael Moore's Sicko

Free-Market advocates from Americans for Prosperity and the Moving Picture Institute joined forces with Bureaucrash to protest the DC movie premier. The VIP list that walked the red carpet was a who's who od statism. Dennis Kucinich, Maxine Waters and of course, Michael Moore were there to support transferring more money and freedom from you to Washington DC. There was even a special guest: Fidel Castro! Too bad he wasn't allowed inside the theater. Instead he lauded the virtues of mandatory universal health care: waiting lists, lack of proper treatments and filthy hospitals.

Our merry band of activists were there telling passerbys that "SOCIALISM KILLS" and that "GUARANTEED HEALTHCARE [is a] GUARANTEED FAILURE." Michael Moore asked a reporter what we were protesting and was told "that you're a socialist." Indeed.

Coma Survivors Knows Another World is Posssible
    and Prefers Capitalism

Here is a wonderful story of a Polish man who just woke up from a 19 year coma to discover that he is no longer enslaved to a communist government. I'll let the AP tell you the rest of this heartwarming story:

"He was so amazed to see the colorful streets, the goods," she said. "He says the world is prettier now" than it was 19 years ago, when Poland was still under communist rule.

"I could not talk or do anything, now it's much better," Jan Grzebski, 65, told in TVN24 Television in a weak but clear voice, lying in bed at his home in the northern city of Dzialdowo.

"I wake up at 7 a.m. and I watch TV," he said, smiling slightly.

Wojciech Pstragowski, a rehabilitation specialist, said Grzebski was shocked at the changes in Poland - especially its stores: "He remembered shelves filled with mustard and vinegar only" under communism. Poland shed communism in 1989 and has developed democracy and a market economy.

Operation Eminent Domination

Approximately 35 crashers showed up on the steps of the Supreme Court in Washington D.C. to protest the recent Kelo decision denied people a right to their own property. Crashers sang parody songs, dressed up like the Supreme Reapers (a cross between the grim reaper and Supreme Court Justices), Someone made a house for the purpose of street theater and the night before activists had a sign making party. The network worked just as it should but unfortunately our protest was stopped half way through when the Capitol was evacuated due to a wayward airplane.

Crash Across America Goes North East

Join Bureaucrash on an international odyssey from beautiful Orono, Ontario (home of the the Liberty Summer Seminar) to the bowels of bureaucracy in Washington, DC.

There will be a crew of five crashers (JA$ON, MisesFan, Janet, Erin and Xaq Fixx.) who will be talking to people and reporting on places via blogs, photos and video diaries.

Some of the events along the way will include crashing statism (duh), breaking at least one dumb law in every state, visiting liberty landmarks, meeting / picking up crashers along the way, Major Maker concerts and lots of singing to the radio.

We will have daily video updates posted on this map so people can follow our zany misadventures.

Concerned Citizens of Zimbabwe to Protest against
    Police Brutality in Zimbabwe

View the facebook group here

From Denford Madenyika:

Concerned Citizens of Zimbabwe living in the United States of America will hold a Protest Demo on Friday, April 20 from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM to express their opposition to the persistent police brutality in their country.

The protest will be held at the Zimbabwe Embassy in Washington DC at:

1608 New Hampshire Ave NW Washington DC 20009.

Having spearheaded the war of independence, The Government of Zimbabwe has increasingly become combative causing distress to many families. Many of us are concerned that our future, our hopes, and our dreams for a better Zimbabwe are at risk.

The protest’s overriding concern is for justice and decent treatment of all citizens irrespective of their political opinions. Most people would like to join together for reasons best known to them. The situation in Zimbabwe has affected each and every one of us in many different ways. We believe you and your friends will join us in demanding that all citizens be valued and respected in their own right.

Our goals for this protest are:

1. To show solidarity with our fellow countrymen who cannot freely express themselves back home.

2. To demand political tolerance for those holding differing views from the Zimbabwean Government.

3. To seek audience with the International Community on how they can respond to these brutalities.

Please share this information with all Concerned Zimbabweans or friends of Zimbabwe.
