Free Kareem Rally 2009
Kareem Amer was arrested on the 6th of November, 2006. He was sentenced to one year in prison for “insulting the president of Egypt” and 3 years for criticizing Islam, a total of 4 years in prison. He was only 22 at the time of his arrest.
Sadly, he remains in prison and to this day is the first blogger in the Arab world who was officially sentenced to prison merely for his personal blog posts. In 2007 there was evidence of him being tortured. Egypt is praised by the UN for their commitment to human rights, but where is that commitment when no one has a right to free speech? Why is Kareem still in prison if the Egyptian government supposedly respects individual rights and guarantees freedom of expression?
