Start of Something Big?

Today’s Tax Day Tea Parties brought out tens of thousands nationwide to protest the ever-increasing scope of government.

I grabbed a recently laid-off buddy of mine, with plenty of time on his hands in this depressed economy, and went down to my local Tea Party to check in on Janet Napolitano’s right-wing conspirators.

Adrienne and her not-so-opinionated sisterThree to four-hundred protestors turned out here in Coos Bay, a largely conservative town on Oregon’s southern coast.  Many passing drivers honked their horns in solidarity with the demonstrators in an event that seemed to be very well received by the community.  The only voice of dissent (pardon the pun) was one “lady” who drove past shouting obscenities because she could not find parking at the store across the street from the post office where the event began.

I estimate that a full eighty percent of those on hand were middle-aged, or older, but I was able to find some younger crashers-in-the-making to speak to.

Adrienne, a 22-year-old from Coos Bay said that the bailouts are what have her so incensed.  “I remember watching the Senate floor debate and none of them could say that they had read any of it,” she said.  “It’s not fair to tax people for success.”

Another protestor, 23-year-old Rhett Sanders, said that his greatest concern was for the future.  “I have two children and I want them to grow up as free citizens.”

Rhett SandersThe protestors were in very high spirits and shouted slogans like “Let us scream, let us shout; no more bailouts.”  The catchiest one, despite the double negative, was “No more Freddie, no more Fannie; we don’t need no government nanny.”

After about an hour at the post office we walked about a half mile down to the boardwalk and continued there, on the very busy Highway 101.  More honks and thumbs-ups from passing drivers signalled that many people are supportive of the message.

So how do we turn these people into libertarians, Ron Paul Republicans or  (in my case) market anarchists?  I passed out Agorist flyers to younger people unti I ran out but kept my sales pitch pretty limited, referring them to the websites on the flyer.  I also talked to several people about Bureaucrash.  There were a few libertarians and Ron Paul Republicans on hand, though I’m pretty certain that I was the lone anarchist in attendance.  I was dressed like a normal person, though, so as not to scare anyone.

I was a little dismayed to see so few young people on hand but the rally did take place during working hours and that may explain some of it.  Revolutions need the enthusiasm of youth and without a lot more of it this one may be short-lived.

I have posted more photos in the Tea Party Reports thread on Bureaucrash Social.  Be sure to check out the Tax Slavery Sucks and Enjoy Capitalism Intel Overviews for more intellectual ammo to shoot down the nanny government supporters.
