Update on ACPD Interaction

Posted on January 28th, 2009 by Pete Eyre in Bureaucrash HQ

police5111police-shield-1On Sunday I sent an email to the ACPD expressing my interest in meeting with them to discuss an encounter I had with a couple of their officers last Friday. Yesterday I received a call from Lt. Jim Daly of the ACPD. The meat of our conversation went something like this:

Daly: “What would you like to happen?”
Eyre: “Well, I don’t know if you’ve had a chance to view the related video but I think it’s clear why I requested a sit-down meeting with the chief or someone else high-up in the department. Arlington touts the fact that it’s an accredited department but the actions of the officer caught on tape don’t seem like something worth boasting about.”
Daly: “You can meet with me and my partner.”

Since I’m heading out of town tomorrow we agreed that I would call them on Monday morning and we would go from there. After jotting down their contact info we wished each other well until our next conversation.

Stay tuned.

If anyone has thoughts on how I should proceed let me know. Thus far the bulk of the feedback I’ve received has been very supportive. In addition to the support some folks have advocated that I file a restraining order/stalking charges/harassment/conduct unbecoming of an officer against the officer in question, though a couple of detractors have resorted to calling me  a “lil bitch” and telling me to “get a life.” As I told the latter group:

Law is supposed to be objective, and applicable to all. And if you’re fine allowing cops to break this law, at what point do you believe they should start abiding by the law?

As Thomas Jefferson noted, “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.”
