Internationally syndicated talk show host Ian Freeman was threatened with jail time following his attendance of Andrew Carroll’s civil disobedience protest of prohibition.

Freeman is currently on “suspended sentence” for three contempt of court charges levied for not sitting fast enough during his court appearance in Keene, New Hampshire. The sentence was conditional upon Ian’s agreement not to break any laws for a period of 90 days. Earlier this week, however, he received a copy of a petition from the police prosecutor, attempting to have him returned to jail for his attendance of the local protest, claiming Freeman had committed the criminal act of “Criminal Liability for Conduct of Another.”

Ian covered Andrew Carroll’s event, including proofing and distributing the press release Andrew wrote up (I did too!), interviewing him on his show Free Talk Live, and video recording the event as he attended in person.

The implications of this are stifling, both on the common sense side and on a free speech and press angle. Despite the fact that no evidence exists showing Ian possessed cannabis during this event, the prosecutor is claiming his involvement was criminal. What then, is the criminal act? It would seem that to the prosecutor, promoting civil disobedience itself is criminal despite supposed protections of free speech and the press.

The entire point of the protection of free speech is to speak up, out and against the government people when they are wrong. Considering the lives ruined by the drug war, the rights smashed to bits in the name of the drug war, and the insane amount of money taken to perpetuate it, the drug war is most certainly wrong.

What’s left when they’ve taken free speech? Stand. Raise hell. Speak out about this. They might not let you do it tomorrow.
