$3.4 Billion for a Coffee Shop?
That’s the logic that led James Bunn of DC’s Ward 8 to vote in favor of constructing a new sprawling headquarters for the Department of Homeland Security in Southeast D.C. In a related Washington Post article Norton explains:
Those 14,000 employees will need a place to live . . . And they’ll need somewhere to eat. I can already see a coffee shop or a sit-down restaurant. It’s a win-win situation for the ward.
And that’s how politicians operate — they seek to “bring home the bacon” to their constituents, no matter the harms caused to those outside their district (read: taxpayers whose money is taken). And though public outcry may force the most excessive cases (i.e. the Bridge to Nowhere) to be scaled back or eliminated, most projects make it through.
And no matter what promises to curtail such activity are given, it will not change unless and until those in government truly do respect individuals and their property. Because, as Thomas Jefferson stated:
When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.
As for Bunn, I guess he didn’t get the memo that the DHS complex will have its own cafeteria… Perhaps a sign DHS is still lacks the ability to share information?
