Draft Reinstatement?

Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) is proposing that we reinstate the draft…again.

This isn’t the first time he’s proposed this. Believe it or not, he actually did this a few years earlier.  Check out a blog post I wrote on that situation back in 2004, here, if interested.

During the 2004 election season, it came to light that John Kerry had initially supported a proposed reinstatement of the draft, in addition to numerous other Democrats.  Charles Rangel, a Representative from Harlem, New York, was the original sponsor of a bill in 2004 that sought to reinstate the draft in hopes that the military would have a more even variety of races, as opposed to what Rangel views as a military that sends poor, minority youths overseas to die in warfare simply because their socioeconomic status does not allow them to have any other choice.  This was Rangel’s reasoning behind trying to reinstate the draft back then, and now, he is proposing it AGAIN.  This time he says that it will be a safeguard against politicians being trigger-happy and sending our troops to war when they have their own children involved…as well as his belief that if we do get into military conflict with Iran or N. Korea, we would need a draft to have an adequate amount of troops.
