Capitalist of the World… United?
As I was sitting in the Cleveland Airport reading about “the rise of soft paternalism” in the current Economist, some dude took a break from talking on his cell phone to speak with me. “There is no need for them to unite – they are already united” he informed me as he gestured toward my “Capitalists of the World Unite!” tee. Then he asked where I stood on the issue probably hoping my shirt was ironic. I proudly told him that I believe in capitalism and then I asked him what he believes. He told me that he didn’t know but I could tell that he was uncomfortable with someone who openly supported capitalism.
I told him that “It looks like you benefit greatly from capitalism” as I gestured at what he was wearing: A Jansport backpack, Dickies khakis (which I also own), etc. At that point he said, I don’t know” before walking off.
